In this sixth edition of the Design Interviews series, discover the interior designer, Jessica Locas. Passionate about design and real estate since she was young, she is also the owner of a growing design firm! In this exclusive interview, learn more about her story, her favorite trends and her favorite decorating tips.
What is the Design Interviews series ? It is a special series of articles featuring our local designers and content creators! In this segment, you can read all the highlights of Décors Véronneau’s conversations with specialists in the Canadian home design industry.
1- What style inspires your interior design?
Jessica : “I am very inspired by the classic style! Lately, the heritage design is very popular… I love this more ancestral or even vintage style; the stone houses, the refurbished furniture and the decorations found in antique stores. I love to create bold decorations and add different colors, such as green, blue or burgundy. It’s important to dare and create decorations that reflect our image and what we feel good in!”
2- What led you to create an Instagram account dedicated to home decor?
Jessica : “My interior design business, Jessica Locas Design, specializes in major renovations, including kitchen and bathroom renovations in the Greater Montreal area. I wanted to share the truth on my page @jessicalocasdesign about the field of construction, design and architecture! I give a lot of information and we talk about the real stuff… I don’t hesitate to share the different problems you might encounter on a construction site. It’s inspiring to see different images of home decor to create your dream house, but I want to show the path to get to that result! A difficult path, but always worth it! I’m here to inspire and inform about the field of renovation and interior design in Canada.
I also show my own renovation projects. Recently, I bought a small house that I renovated myself with the help of my dad. In addition, I also talk openly about the differences between professionals in the field (architects, architectural technologists, designers, decorators and engineers) so you know which one to hire depending on the project!”

3- When it comes to decorating, are there any items you couldn't live without?
Jessica : “My vases, I have several to display my flower bouquets and I choose them carefully according to colors and sizes! This is very important, as it changes the style if the vase is too small or too big. Trends also change in interior design so having the latest vases gives the decor a fresh look very easily. Styling in a space is as important as the design of the plans and the space.”
4- How important are flowers and plants to you when it comes to decorating a space?
Jessica : “It’s essential! Whether it’s a small or large touch of greenery, it’s what gives life to a decor… it’s so much warmer. However, you have to be careful with the amount of plants, because it can easily take over the rest of the decor. It’s nice to integrate a little touch of flowers or greenery in each room! Don’t forget the bathroom, a nice little pot with flowering branches is just wow!”
5- What plants are in your top 3?
Jessica : “The snake plant, the bird of paradise and the zamioculcas! There is even the cedar branch which can be interesting in a floral arrangement.”
6 - What is your favorite trend in the world of plants (variety, a way to use them: in pots, in plant walls, hanging, etc.)?
Jessica : “I would go with the large plants (60”) in a stoneware pot! A big plant to have a nice impact in the decor, but not to overload the room … with a little reminder somewhere of another small plant.”
7- What's the best trick you've learned for showcasing plants?
Jessica : “Choose your favorite styles instead of following trends! You need to put just enough, while keeping the balance to show them off. For floral arrangements, it can be interesting to add them on a beautiful kitchen island.”
8- How do you select plants for your home (favourite, current trend, etc.)?
Jessica : “My favorites influenced by the trends of the moment. However, I like to have a personalized decor so when a trend is too strong and is everywhere, I like to choose something else to be more original.”
9- What do you like best about Décors Véronneau's flowers and plants?
Jessica : “The variety of styles and colors, but also the quality and realism of the flowers and plants. Décors Véronneau is always on the cutting edge and offers the latest trends, so it’s the perfect place to enhance the interior designs I create.”
10- According to you, what is the main advantage of the artificial?
Jessica : “Durability and easy maintenance. Since artificial models are very realistic, there is no excuse not to opt for this solution.”
11- What is your favourite season to decorate?
Jessica : “In the winter, since we don’t have much greenery outside in Quebec, it’s interesting to create some inside. I love the more wintery floral arrangements, like this one I created for a kitchen in shades of blue. It looks different with the cedar branches!”
12 - Which Décors Véronneau's plants or flowers do you have in mind for the next season?
Jessica : “Peonies and lilacs, we stay in the classics!”
