Decorating your natural or artificial Christmas tree is an art. However, we have some good news ! With our tips and tricks you will master it brilliantly. From the choice of your ornaments, to your tree skirt, here’s how to decorate your Christmas tree, with in bonus, a measurement chart to determine the number of ornaments, ribbons and Christmas greeneries you will need.

1- Pick a theme for your Christmas tree

Before deciding on a particular ornament, decide on a theme for your Christmas decor. There are many styles and colors of xmas tree decorations, but not all of them necessarily go together, so it is important to establish a color scheme beforehand.

Black, white and green

This year, the contrast of black and white is so popular for a monochrome theme. Green Christmas baubles can be mixed in with this style, as well as golden ornaments, if you want to turn it all into a natural Christmas decor.

Pink, champagne and purple

Do you prefer pastel colors? It goes without saying that you will be breathtaking with the Whimsical December theme, in which the color pink is in the spotlight! In order to get a magical Christmas tree decoration, you can integrate snowy white fir trees, as well as decorative animals.

Gold, cream and burgundy

Is your Christmas evening going to be all in elegance and festivities? The Everlasting Evening theme will charm you with its feathers, pampas, burgundy Christmas balls and golden ornaments. They will shine bright in your illuminated Christmas tree!

Red, green and brown

For those who love the classic style, we haven’t forgotten you! The Christmas Together theme will take you back to your sweetest memories with its red baubles, holly branches and poinsettia stems. Forest green color is a great addition, whether it’s in the form of pine branches or ornaments. Don’t hesitate to get some natural pine cones to match the whole.

2- Calculate the number of ornaments with the chart

Do you know how many baubles and ornaments you will need to decorate your whole tree? First determine the height of it, then use our chart to approximate the number of ornaments you will need. Note that this is an estimate based on decorating a 360 degree tree only. That being said, if you are only planning to decorate one side, divide this number by two:

6ft Christmas tree

9ft Christmas tree

12ft Christmas tree

3- Determine the color and number of Christmas lights

Does your dream tree come in warm or cool tones? If you choose a modern, white or flocked Christmas tree, choose “pure white” Christmas lights. As for classic green Christmas trees, they are always more natural with warm white lighting. Some Christmas lights twinkle to make your holiday decor even more magical.

In general, you will need about 100 lights / foot. For example, if your Christmas tree is 6 feet tall, you will need 6 sets of lights for the following model:

4- Vary the size and shape of your ornaments

The perfect tree is not symmetrical! You have to vary the different patterns and shapes, while staying within your color palette and theme. Here is an example of a rustic Christmas theme, where faux fur, wood, and birch make a happy mix that is completely natural, while respecting the original theme:

Discover how to create groupings:

Dare to use oversized accessories on your tree as well. Christmas ornaments are varied and many can be used to decorate the tree. Think of decorative ladders, Christmas gnomes, pairs of rustic skis… in short, all ornaments measuring around 15″. Of course, use them sparingly to get a well-balanced and eye-catching Christmas tree!

5- Vary the texture of your Christmas tree fillers

There are many options when it comes to spruce branches, artificial berries and artificial flower stems. Today, there are models with integrated Christmas ornaments, as well as festive eucalyptus foliage. These original options make a change from the classic poinsettias, pine branches and red berries. The key is to use them not only to camouflage the holes in the tree, but also to make it look fuller and more decorated. Refer to the measurement chart to find out how much to get, depending on the size of your tree.

6- Add Christmas ribbons, garlands or tulles

Ready to start decorating your tree? Using the measurement chart above, you can determine how many rolls of tulle or ribbon you will need. Note that there are a variety of different prints and styles.

Discover how to use the ribbons:

A tulle ribbon can be interesting, if you want to bring some movement in your tree, while hiding the less provided areas of your Christmas tree. Think outside the box and use the ribbon in an original way in your tree, by making loops. Thanks to the metallic ties inside the tulles and ribbons, you can create the desired shape and secure it on the branches of your Christmas tree.

7- Finish of with a tree topper and skirt

Too often forgotten, the tree top can make a big difference in the final look of your tree! Whether it’s a star, a snowflake, a flower, a bow, or an angel, the tree top is a decorative accent not to be overlooked. The same goes for the tree skirt, you can use: burlap, snow mat, basket, throw or barn wood cover.
