As gorgeous and well designed as it may be, your patio may be less interesting to hang out on if you neighbors can watch your every move from their upstairs window. It’s not surprising that people enjoy spending their time outdoors in spaces that feel more private and sheltered. While rows of cedar hedges can be a great option, having them is not always a reality for urban city-dwellers where the yards can be small, or for those who only have a balcony. We’ve compiled some solutions to gaining privacy in your yard with a botanical focus.
Plant trellises
Our first option is to use privacy fence panels, covered in artificial foliage. They’re the perfect privacy screens! These trellises can be installed right on your fence, or even on an outdoor banister. They can also become stand-alone pieces when inserted into a wooden frame, create custom for this specific use. They are so many ways to use our privacy screens. Since they’re expandable, it’s also possible to adjust their size to your needs.
The best part? The trellis will add a gorgeous touch of greenery to your outdoor décor without any need for maintenance. Pro tip: be wary of similar products with prices that seem too good to be true – because they probably are. The foliage on the fence panels should be high-quality, and should also be treated to withstand UV rays without discoloring.
Tall flower boxes
Another way to add privacy to your yard is by using tall planters in which you’ll add tall plants and greenery. River grass, and other types of tall grass, with their full and dense greenery, are the ideal additions to your planters. Some shrubs can also do the trick, we definitely prefer artificial shrubs, available in a variety of sizes, all of which require no maintenance. In order to get your desired level of privacy, you have to take into account what surrounds you.
If you want to spend time in your pool or on your patio without worrying about prying eyes, you should opt for plants and greenery that are 5’ to 6’ tall. The idea is not to completely hide every inch of your yard, but more to create a visual barrier. Some types of palm trees, like the Areca with its large fronds, can also be very useful.
Hanging flower baskets
On your balcony, you can use hanging planters, filled with hibiscus or geraniums, and group them together, installing them at different heights. In the same vein, flower boxes that hang from a railing can also be just as useful. You’ll only have to use the right amount of flowers and foliage, prioritizing hanging plants like ivy. With this option, when you opt for artificial plants, your planters will always look more full, from the beginning of the season right until the end – which is always a good reason to go faux.
Green walls
On a larger scale, wooden panels are a widely used option because of their low price point. If you feel like this is the option for you, you can always add touches of greenery, transforming the wooden panels into a greenery or boxwood wall, or even a vertical garden. It will look less austere, and create a warm and welcoming atmosphere in your yard. There is a large variety of small outdoor pots that so easy to hang. If your pots don’t have a small hole at the bottom for water drainage, you can fill the bottom of the pot with rocks or pebbles to ensure your plants continue looking their best.
