Scandinavian style has been around for almost 70 years, but it remains just as relevant today. Inspired by the lifestyle in Nordic countries, this style is at once minimalist and functional. This doesn’t mean that homes decked out in this style lack charm or warmth – it’s actually the opposite – it marries the simplicity of the Nordic lifestyle with home design.
The choice of colors
When adopting Scandinavian style in your home, opt for lighter, more neutral colors. We see a lot of whites, many different shades of grey (oh, hey, cement planters!) with a few black accents. This brings a calm and serene atmosphere to any space. Different types of light are the star of this style, whether it’s natural or artificial, it’s what makes the space.
When thinking about your furniture and floors, natural fibers and neutral colors are the preference. Light shades are omnipresent, with clean, crisp lines, while leaving any type of flourish out. Look for functionality above all else. For example, opt for furniture that doubles as storage.
With this decor, try to prioritise contrast with botanical greens, which add warmth to the space. Potted plants are presents, much like wood, as they bring nature indoors, and natural elements are essential to this type of style. In order to keep your space airy and light, use hanging planters for your greenery, as well as small decorative plants, which are a favorite!
The choice of patterns
In terms of patterns, geometric is king. You’ll find these in carpets, rugs, throws and cushions – comfortable pieces, because comfort shouldn’t be left to chance. The cold temperatures in Nordic countries have ensured that adopting a Scandinavian style decor will turn any space into a refuge from the elements. Even eating areas favor throws, pillows, and any kind of soft addition.
The choice of home accents
While looking for decorative accessories, look for small vases that will add graphic interest. Group them, either empty or with some flowers, next to carefully selected lanterns and candles, while being sure to never overcrowd any one space. Always be sure that the space looks airy and that your décor accents can breathe. For this reason, we suggest opting for clear glass.
Add some oomph to bare walls with a decorative deer head. We love bears and hares as inviting additions to children’s spaces. Gallery walls are a Scandistyle staple – choose different landscapes and black and white illustrations to fill your frames.
Finally, because comfort is the baseline of this style, fur throws and cushions (faux is always fab!) are often placed here and there on your leather couches, which is a habit that should definitely be preserved, reiterated and recreated over and over.
A final word on hygge decor
Over the last few years there has been increased interest in an offshoot of Scandinavian style: Hygge. Hailing from Denmark, the idea of Hygge is a lifestyle that is based around cocooning for your own well-being, taking things slower, but also relishing in the pleasure of being surrounded by loved ones, and living in the moment.
